She embarked on her music career with all-female R&B group Sista in the early-mid 1990s and later became a member of the Swing Mob collective along with childhood friend and longtime collaborator Timbaland , with whom she worked on projects for Aaliyah , 702 ,

The album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 , the highest charting debut for a female rapper at the time.

Missy Elliot popularly called Missy Missy is one female act that most aspiring female acts should look up to. She created a style for herself and her brand.

She came out in a time where women where not considered to be strong and spoken, especially as a black woman in a industry where the whites controlled everything.

It’s safe to say that life wasn’t favorable for her during her growing days. She was molested by her cousin in her early days and then when get family moved away from what she knew to be home, they went broke.

Now most of us know Missy Elliot as a strong woman but she also had her share of troubles, tears and struggles.

Imagine dressing differently and coming out as a female rapper in a time where rappers where considered to be hoodlums.

Elliot still made sure she broke through, she made sure she actualized her dreams and today we have a lot of female rap acts.

Elliott has won four Grammy Awards , eight MTV Video Music Awards , two
American Music Awards , six BET Awards , and a Billboard Women in Music award for Innovator.

On June 13, 2019, Elliott was inducted to the Songwriters Hall of Fame , becoming the first female rapper to receive this honor.

Also in 2019, Elliott received an honorary Doctor of Music degree from Berklee College of Music and the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award . She was also the first female rapper to receive the award.

Elliott received the Women’s Entrepreneurship Day Music Pioneer Award at the United Nations in 2019 in recognition for her achievements in music and being a leader. This award was placed in the Congressional Record.
